The Power of Education; The Great Equalizer

Posted on July 10, 2025July 10, 2025

Growing up in poverty is more than just a financial struggle. For children and families living in these conditions, it often means facing daily battles that most people can hardly imagine. Chief among these challenges is the uncertainty of where the next meal will come from. And when young people are worried about how they’re going to eat or meet their basic needs, even the best educational opportunities can feel out of reach.

I know this first-hand. I grew up in and out of different homes and foster care. My stepfather was in prison for most of my childhood, and my mother struggled with making good choices for her children when they were in her care. There were times when food was scarce, and the stress of survival overshadowed everything else. Even though I ultimately rose above these challenges and built a strong, successful career in business, I can honestly say that the constant fight to meet basic needs added an unnecessary layer of difficulty to my journey. It delayed my progress and made every step harder than it needed to be.

“Talent, intelligence, and drive exist in every child—but opportunity does not.

That’s why education is often called the great equalizer.”

But not everyone gets the chance to climb out from under such a heavy burden. Talent, intelligence, and drive exist in every child—but opportunity does not. That’s why education is often called the great equalizer. It gives young people the tools they need to reimagine their future, to rise above their circumstances, and to build a better life. Yet we must also remember: education alone is not enough. A hungry child cannot focus in class. A teenager worried about feeding their siblings cannot plan for college. Before they can take advantage of the best educational programs, children need the security of knowing their basic needs will be met.

The Power of Food Security

When families have access to a stable food source, it changes everything. It allows children to show up to school nourished and ready to learn. It gives parents the peace of mind to support their kids’ education instead of being consumed with survival. Studies show that food security is directly tied to academic performance, emotional well-being, and long-term success. Simply put, we cannot talk about education as a pathway out of poverty without talking about hunger.

Building a Better Future Together

The good news is that we have the power to change this. Communities, governments, and businesses can work together to ensure no child goes to bed hungry. School meal programs, community food banks, and family support initiatives are vital pieces of the puzzle. When combined with access to quality education, they create a powerful foundation that helps families break the cycle of poverty for good.

“I see you. I was you. And I want you to know that your current

situation does not define your potential.”

To the young people growing up in difficult circumstances: I see you. I was you. And I want you to know that your current situation does not define your potential. With the right support, you can rise above. And to those of us who have walked this path and come out the other side: we have a responsibility to reach back and make the journey easier for others.

Because every child deserves the chance to dream, learn, and thrive—not just survive.
